Claiming Caste
Land, Water and Hierarchy in North India, c. 1660–1950
Drawing on Persian and Marwari land grants from the archives of Jodhpur, the book argues that hierarchical status in arid-zone South Asia was inseparable from control over land and water. Across three centuries of dynastic turnover, colonial revenue reform, and national partition, the same idioms of grant, gift, and grazing right were mobilized to defend — and to contest — claims of caste.
Based on the author's Ph.D. dissertation (University of Pennsylvania, 2022).
